Hi
I've just got XP, and I keep getting a small generic
windows file (approx 250K) named "~" at the bottom of my
screen.Does anyone know what it is? I have anti-virus
softare installed and it doesn't seem to be affecting my
PC but its very strange.

That's a bug in a recent OE update - MS knows about it, and I'm sure it will
be fixed in a future patch/release. It's a copy of your windows address
book.

After deleting the stupid file about 20 times, I finally tried leaving it
there but making it hidden. I did that about 3 weeks ago and it hasn't
reappeared since.

It doesn't always show up on the desktop - I've seen people moaning
about it showing up in 'their documents', C:\, and sundry other places.
Of course, it's much easier to spot if it picks the desktop.

Hi GVS

It would advantageous if you could provide all of the folders that this 'Tilde' occurs in. We can then try and work out why this occurring.

That's GSV actually! 8>.

I'd suggest you groups.google.com for 'tilde' and/or '~' in message
titles and you'll find an interesting range of places mentioned.

I personally don't suffer from it, since I don't keep addresses in the
wab, where any-old-virus that gets through my firewalls, AV software,
and energy shields, might be able to find them. 8>.

Hi GSV

The tilde on the desktop is a copy of the OE Address Book - after the Address has been altered. It is a 'bug' that is being worked on. I would have thought you have know that, GSV - obviously not...

Yes, I know that .. what makes you think I didn't? afaict you asked me
'all the folders it can show up in', and I pointed you at
groups.google.com, where if you look through messages posted by
sufferers you'll find an interesting variety of places mentioned - all
the same bug, at least all the files are copies of the wab. Off the top
of my head I've seen people finding it in c:\~, and under c:\documents
and settings\<me>\~, but there are probably other places too.

If it's on the desktop it's pretty obvious. if it shows up in
c:\windows\system32\~, most people won't even notice. (But those that
did will have posted it to usenet =somewhere=. 8>.)

GSV

I don't need pointing anywhere - I can find my own way round the really hazardous search options of www.google.com - have I got that right -I don't want to spoil your posting? Please correct me if I have strayed from the straight and narrow.

OK, I guess I'll stop trying to help you then, since it seems to upset
you for some reason which I can't quite fathom. I still don't know why
you suddenly leapt to the conclusion that I didn't know what the problem
was, but I'm not sure I care enough to continue conversing.

You, try to help me - my five year old grandson has got more marbles that you have. Take a break GSV - you need one.

You asked, did you not:

to which I endeavoured to offer you a solution. Since you didn't like
it, and seem intent on descending to name calling, what can I say but
