Strange File types suddenly appearing in "MY Documents"

I have recently had about 1000 files with the extension
type ".IDX" appear in my "My Documents" folder. I have
scanned them with a very upto date Norton Anti virus, and
it detected nothing. I would like to know what these
files are and is it safe to delete them

Result for Filetype : idx : Microsoft Outlook Express file, Relational
database index (Microsoft FoxPro), Relational database index (Symantec Q&A),
Index file (Microsoft Clip Gallery v. 1.x), Index file (Pro/Engineer) take
your pick but from here I have no idea what one you have although I would
lean more towards the first one :)
