Strange file and Auto Update issue.

Recently, I've acquired an empty, unnamed file on my desktop. No clue
as to where it came from. When I try to send it to the recycle bin I
get a "Cannot read from the source file or disk" error. When I tried
to incinerate the file with my System Mechanic 6 program, the file
remained and wiped out half of my desktop shortcuts. The mystery file
does not seem to effect my pc, but it is getting annoying to look at
and it needs to go due to what it can do with my shortcuts. Before any
of that happened, my Windows auto update downloaded an update for the
new Windows Defender. I downloaded the update successfully, but soon
after I was notified of another new update and was prompted to download
it but it was the same update. When I tried to restart my pc, I was
prompted to turn off instead of restart because I was advised that I
had not downloaded the new update, even though I clearly had. This
continued on until I shut the auto updates off completly. It works
for now but I can't keep it like that forever. I'm running XP Home
systempack 2 and System Mechanic Pro 6 to manage my system. Any advise
would help. Thanks.

I have always been able to delete any file using this program. I don't
know if this mystery file is causing your update issue or not. I am
having the same problem on one of my pc's, but it's with microsoft
update and a script update for windows media player, but I haven't
figured out the cause yet.
