strange desktop icon

A strange icon has appeared on my desktop. It is a small square with a
check mark inside. It does not seem to have any function. I cannot move it
around and cannot not delete it. Clicking right or left on it brings up
nothing. I tried
rebooting and it is still there. How can I delete this weird icon? I am
using Windows XP. Thanks Connie

Boot up in safe mode and see if it is still their.

Then check by running Msconfig and check for something unusual in your
startup.
