as hard disks are getting bigger, what is the max size that WinXP will
support using FAT32?

Hi Danny,

Using FAT32, Windows XP can format upto 32 GB. However, it does not mean
that it won't support HDDS larger than 32 GB. You can mount HDDs larger
than 32GB formatted using other operating systems, and load them with XP.

With FAT32, the max. size of a single file is ~4GB.

Hi, Danny.

You might be interested in reading these pages from the online version of
the Windows Pro Resource Kit:
Size Limitations in NTFS and FAT File Systems
http://www.microsoft.com/resources/...Windows/XP/all/reskit/en-us/prkc_fil_tdrn.asp

As it says there: "In theory, FAT32 volumes can be about 8 terabytes;
however, the maximum FAT32 volume size that Windows XP Professional can
format is 32 GB. Therefore, you must use NTFS to format volumes larger than
32 GB. However, Windows XP Professional can read and write to larger FAT32
volumes formatted by other operating systems."

In other words, if you can use another operating system to format it, WinXP
can use a FAT32 volume larger than any HD on the market today. Win98/ME can
format FAT32 volumes as large as about 128 GB.
