Hi, I'm having problem installing a new USB external HD. I connected it to
my laptop with Windows XP sp2 installed. It shows a new device in Device
Manager but not in explorer.
However it worked when i connected to my desktop which has the same version
of XP. I've noticed there is a difference in the registry between two. There
are four volumes under
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\STORAGE\Volume
in my desktop registry. But only three in my laptop. Both HD in desktop and
laptop has three partitions. Hence three volumes in the registry. Extra one
in desktop is from the external HD.
My question is why is that? what is the criteria for XP to add a volume in
that registry entry??

1st let's backup. You installed an "external" drive, it shows in "device
manager", but what happens if you go to Control Panel, Admin Tools, Computer
Management, Disk Management? Does the drive show up there? If so, has a
partition been created and formatted (Formatted partitions are normally
blue, unformatted space is normally black)? Try right clicking on the area
that's black and select format drive (that is if its black) If or once
you've done that, you should have a drive letter assigned, it not, what
happens when you right click on the blue area and try to assign one?
