Is there a way to stop outlook express from nagging you to compact the
files? I have a large disk drive and feel no need to do the compacting. Is
my thinking wrong to not want this?

Thanks,
Bill

It will do it anyway, by design - every 100'th shutdown of the program.

Easy install a different mail client like Thunderbird for eg and don't
use Lookout Express.

They all seem to compact files but most don't whine on about it or
leave you open to half the nasty crap on the net by default for that
matter.

Thunderbird nags too about compacting folders, but it has a preferences
setting where you can minimize the frequency of the nags somewhat.

You really do need to let OE compact the folders or they will grow to the
point OE won't work at all. Say Yes and leave the computer alone until it
finishes.

No and yes.

You can't stop OE from compacting automatically every 100 times you close
it.

You can tell OE to stop asking you about it by checking the "Don't ask me
again" prompt, but then Automatic Compacting will still take place but
without warning you.

General OE Caveats:

- Don't use Inbox or Sent Items to archive messages. Move them to local
folders created for this purpose.

- Empty Deleted Items folder daily.

- Disable Background Compacting [N/A in SP2] and frequently perform a manual
compact of all OE folders while "working offline". More at
http://www.insideoe.com/files/maintain.htm.

- Do not attempt to close OE via Task Manager or shutdown your machine if
Automatic Compacting is taking place (WinXP SP2 only).

- Your anti-virus application's email scanning feature can also cause
corruption. Disable it. It provides no additional protection.

OETool (www.oehelp.com) has a Compact All button that will reset OE's
counter. You can use this to compact at a more convenient time.
