I put a nonexistent cell reference in the replace with
box and i am getting the 'file not found' popup. My
problem is I selected 9000 cells and without an answer
I'll have to hit cancel 9000 times. Please help!

Hi
Try hitting CTRL+BREAK on your key board. If this does not work:
the hard way: Use the windows taskmanager and 'kill' Excel
Note: the latter one may/would result in lost of data

Thanks for the idea Frank, but it didn't work. The
problem with taskmanger is that it sees Excel as one
process, but I have 4 workbooks open - all unsaved!

Hi
just tried it by myself - but only on some cell ;-)
either put a book on your ESC key or kill Excel

LOL - Methinks you have a somewhat warped idea of 'working' - Gissa job!!! :-)

Nearly midnight so I think I'm going to do my cinderella act very shortly.

A suggestion for NEXT time! --

After having one too many experiences similar to yours, I
learned to select just a cell or two to test the 'find and
replace' first. That way if it doesn't work, you can
correct it, retest until it works properly, and THEN do
the operation on the whole shebang.
