I have a system that I was going to do a Repair on. I
booted from the Cd and started the Repair (Not Repair
console) go all the way to where it is asking for the CD
key. I entered the CD key that is on the laptop as this
is a HP laptop the came with it bundled on the system. CD
Key did not work. So I hit cancel and rebooted. Now every
reboot it goes directly into the setup screen. How to I
stop this from happening and make it boot up normaly? I
can get to the repair console so if there is a file I can
edit that would be usefull.

If you've gotten as far as entering the key, then your original installation
of XP should be assumed GONE. One of the first things you are asked is
where to install XP. Did you choose to install into the same partition? Did
you format that partition?

What copy of XP are you trying to install? I've owned 2 Compaq (Now HP)
laptops, and neither came with the windows CD, just a recovery CD. Are you
trying to install a copy of XP that was not included with the laptop? If
so, the key on the laptop would not work, unless the cd you are installing
is the exact same type of install disc (in your case, an HP OEM copy of XP).

Did you not get a restore disc set with the laptop? You may have to use
those. If you purchased the XP CD to install on this laptop, that cd would
have come with it's own CD key, which is the key you should use.

Perhaps you should call HP and ask them?

You have an entry that has been added to the boot.ini file. Go to
www.booyitng.com and in the Free tolls look for the Boot.ini editor;
EDITBINI

Put that on a DOS mode startup floppy (one made in XP during a floppy
format would do; or use an old Win98 one, boot, run EDITBINI
and use it to delete the line in [Operating Systems] that refers to
setup, leaving just the original one in that section of the file, and
one that matches in the [BootLoader] section. If there is only the one
line in [Operating systems] it probably has a /setup added to it -
delete just that, retaining only the switch /fastdetect (and modifying
the "Setup Windows " section in quotes to something more normal)
