Every now & then, Microsoft Outlook sends a message to a long-deleted address
instead of using the current & correct one. Obvious programming error.

Not likely. You provided insufficient information.
State your Outlook version and precisely how you are selecting your
addresses.
You need to update either your autocompletion cache or autonamecheck list.

Outlook 2003/XP

I have this exact issue. A name is deleted in the auto-complete and all is
well until the user reboots, logs in, goes to Outlook and creates the
message..the old e-mail address comes back.

How do you "update either your autocompletion cache or autonamecheck list"?

Thank you.

Remove individual addresses from the autocompletion cache by highlighting
the entry when presented in the suggested names list (use your arrow key to
migrate to the entry) and then hitting your Delete key before you tab out of
the field. If your autocomplete list contains only a single entry, use the
directions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;289975

To clear the entire cache, follow the instructions here:

If I rename the N2K then all of the names will disappear. Deleting the name
is no problem..the problem lies when the user reboots the pc..is this an
Exchange issue maybe?

You keep posting with different names.
Are you the same poster?
Clarify the problem.

But I don't understand your last question. Are you saying that you use the
Delete key to delete a name from the autocompletion cache, then it reappears
when you restart? If so, your profile is corrupt.
