Often, when I open a document to read, I have to wait for a couple of
minutes, and then I get a message box saying that "the printer has not yet
responded" and do I want to continue without it. I don't want to have to
wait for the printer because 99% of the time I have no intention of using it.
This "feature" is really annoying. How do I avoid having to wait for the
printer?

In Start | Control Panel | Printers, is the default printer a network
printer? If so, install a second copy of your printer driver and configure
it to print to a local port (even if it isn't connected to a local port) and
make it the default printer. Also make sure the printer driver itself is
installed on your hard drive and not on the network.
