stop msmsgs coming back...

two rules keep added to my firewall filter automatically.

they are...

msmsgs, tcp, port xxxxx-xxxxx
msmsgs, udp, port xxxxx-xxxxx

everytime after i deleted it, it just keeps coming back
with different set of port numbers.

does anyone know how to get rid of it permanently.

i don't use windows messenger and already un-check the
otpion for allowing it to run in the background. but
these two annoying rules keep coming back...

This will only appear if you launch the messenger program.
Are you sure the program is never being launched, ever?
There's no little green man down beside the clock?

The version of messenger you are running is using
UPnP to help it traverse the router's NAT feature.


I can think of 4 possibilities:

1) Leave it. It's working the way it's meant to.

2) Change the version of messenger you are using.
Not all versions use UPnP.
I don't offhand know which versions do and don't.
I used to see this on my router, but after upgrading
messenger at some point, it stopped.

3) Turn off UPnP on the firewall / router.

4) Never launch messenger.
If it never starts, it won't poke holes in the firewall.
Beware that there may be different versions of messenger on your
machine.
Windows Messenger, and MSN messenger.
( Don't ask why. It's a mess. )
