How do I stop the automatic merging of new excel worksheets into an open
workbook?

I prefer keeping them separate, and this is driving me bananas!

Thanks,
E-Jo

What you describe is not built-in to Excel. Whatever is happening is due
to some code (macros) that are running. Provide more detail about what you
are doing and what Excel does that you don't want. HTH Otto

Well, it isn't very complicated:
1. I create an Excel file with some data and minimize it.
2. I double click the Excel shortcut icon on my desktop to bring up a new
worksheet and then put some data in that.
3. When I click the original file to enlarge it, I find it joined with the
new file in the same workgroup.
But I'd like to keep them separate.

Hi

You create new workbooks instead of worksheets then (with Excel open, select
from File menu New).

Well, if I double click the excel shortcut it says Microsoft Excel - Book 1.
where do I get the opportunity to do what you are saying?

Sorry if this is very stupid but I haven't used Excel a lot recently

You have your first workbook, have you. Whenever you want another new
workbook, with old one still opened, select from menu (at top of your
screen) File, and then New (when you don't see the choice New in File menu,
click at double-arrow at bottom of menu list to expand it). When several
workbooks are opened simultanously, you can switch between them from Windows
menu, or from Taskbar.

Yes, I can switch between them OK, but I only see one of them
at a time (in the same location and size). I want the other to be
completely independent and behave like an ordinary Notepad file.
