Hi. I started having some kind of problem with my PC that I do not really
understand.

On four occations (when I was using MSN Messenger with video conference), I
got the blue screen that says Windows has
detected a problem and is shutting down to prevent damage. The error
message is a follows:
Stop:0x000000008E ((0xC0000005, 0xF096B5C8,
0xED678810, 0x000000).

* tcpip.sys - address F096B5C8 base at F0968000, Date stamp 444775d3

I have run a virus check and nothing shows. I have not installed any
programs. The only installation done was the regularly Windows updates.

I checked the link ( http://aumha.org/win5/kbestop.htm) suggested i some of
the posting. I was not setting up windows. The error does not say anything
about
KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I read two things but I don't know if it is true:

1) Well, a blue screen now and then is just confirmation that you are
running a legit copy an MS Windows OS.

2) That BIO needs upgrade.

Can someone help me? Thanks. RReis

How frequently does this error occur? and is it only when you use MSN Messenger with video?

The ox8E error can happen under different conditions (not just setting up Windows).

Some other tips: quoting Ron Martell, MS-MVP
<q>
check in Event Viewer for any other error messages that occurred
at or nearly at the same time as this one. Right-click on My
Computer and select Manage. Click on the + to expand the Event Viewer
category to show the 3 or 4 subcategories. Browse through the System
and Application categories and check out any entries there with date
and time stamps that correspond to your error.
</q>

As to the point 1 you had mentioned: the responder was having a bit of fun.
And point 2, a BIOS upgrade is not required at this point.

Now then, not to scare or panic you, but there is another possible cause for this STOP code.
See "The HaxDoor virus may cause a "STOP 0x00000050" or "STOP 0x0000008e" error message"
