I have office XP and I can't figure out how to show the status bar at the
bottom of a email message, any help appreciated. There's no option for it in
the "View" pull-down menu. This would be for an email I received so I can
put the cursor on a link to see what it is.

While Outlook Express does, Outlook will not display the URL of a link over
which you hover your cursor.

So then there's no status bar in an Outlook Email Message Window?

Did I say that? No. There is a status bar (View>Status Bar), but it won't
show what you want it to show.

How do I enable "smart menus?" I don't see anything like that in the
Outlook "Help."

In truth that is an incorrect name. I should have called them "Personalized
menus", as that's the Microsoft term for them. Sorry. You know you have
them enabled when there is an arrow at the bottom if the menu and when you
click that arrow or hover your mouse pointer over it, the menu expands to
show more items. There have been times when people have not realized they
have that feature enabled and don't see a menu item someone has mentioned.
That's because they've never used it so Windows hides it from them,
presenting by default only those menu items they've used recently. You can
find Office products Personalized menus under
View>Toolbars>Customize>Options>Show full menus after a short delay.

That said, did you try adding the "Status Bar" option as I suggested?

The Status Bar button is there in the "Inbox" message header window but in
the email window itself there isn't a "Status bar" button available to
personalize the toolbars, that's where I want to see the "Status Bar."

The Status Bar is a small gray bar at the very bottom of the main Outlook
window (Inbox). I don't know of any other entity called the "Status Bar".
