static ip addresses

Just a quick question:

why do people ask for static i p addressses when logging on to the internet.

I am registering with an ADSL ISP and some FAQ questions ask why if they supply a static IP address.

If they want to run any kind of server on their machine they will need the IP address to remain constant so they don't keep having to give out a new one every day or so.
