I have just recently installed windows xp on my computer.
I had origionally had Windows 98 on it. I formated the
disk and repartitioned it while doing so. Just for info,
it pulled up a stop error a few times while installing
Windows XP. I was able to get by that by pressing F7 at a
certain point in the installation. Anyways, when it first
turns on, it pulls up a screen that asks you to select
the operating system, either Microsoft windows (Windows
98) or Windows XP home edition. Is there a way to get rid
of this screen or not?

Go to Start > Run and type in: MSCONFIG , and hit enter,
Click the BOOT.INI tab.
Next, click "Check All Boot Paths".
This procedure should correct your BOOT.INI file.

This didn't work, the start up screen is still there.
When I clicked Check all Boot Paths, It said all boot
paths are fine. When I do happen to go into windows 98,
it is nothing but a very small MS-DOS program that does
absolutely nothing but tell you that what you entered is
a bad file name. Could it have something to do with the
ACPI that I disabled during the installation of Windows
XP? Or is that something totally different.

Right-click MY COMPUTER and select:

Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery Settings > Edit

CAREFULLY edit your boot.ini file to remove the SECOND entry.
Your boot.ini file should then look similar to this:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home
Edition" /fastdetect
