Startup screen frozen

I am having a problem with Windows XP Home edition. The
system appears to be loading up with no problems. Then as
it says "Windows is starting up..." and is about to show
the users who can log in, the system appears to lock up
and freeze. The screen looks normal, nothing strange and
the mouse still moves around. Ctrl+Alt+Del does nothing.
If I leave the computer overnight, the screen advances a
little, but I still can not log in. The screen then shows
the logout button on the bottom left and on the right,
where the users to login would usually display, is
nothing. Other than the missing usernames, the screen is
completely normal. If I press Ctrl+Alt+Del now, I get a
login prompt reminiscent of win2k, but still can not log
in.

This problem is keeping me from logging in at all. Please
help.

Thank you in advance for any help you may give.

One place to start is to boot into Safe Mode.
You do this by tapping on the F8 key as soon as the LED on your floppy drive
lights up. From there, see if things are normal or not.
If they are normal in Safe Mode, you may want to do a System Restore (see
the Help &Support window for an explanation and wizard). System Restore
changes your software configuration to a point in time before this problem
began. Any updates or software downloads from after the Restore Point date
will have to be reinstalled, but your data and settings stay as they are
now. If System Restore does not help you when you reboot in "normal mode,"
you can just undo it, and look for other causes of this problem. Let us know
what works, or doesn't.
