How do I control which programs automatically start upon startup of the computer
IE AOL instant messenger starts every time - I don't want it to. How do I stop it?

A couple of things u can check:

1) Check in Start->Programs->Startup menu, if you see a shortcut to AOL
there, delete it.
2) In the settings (preferences) of AOL IM, somewhere there should be an
option asking whether the program should start when Windows starts - uncheck
it and it should work.

.
The way I control it is through the registry....
You can go to regedit through the run command and go to
the values that are giving you problems and delete them.
Just make sure they are not important first.!! You can
make a back up first easy just open regedit then export
a file and call it back run or something. that should
work You can email me back if it doesn't.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersi
on\Run

AOL instant messenger starts

Look-in AOL Properties sheet and uncheck "Run when windows starts" or similar option.
