HELP! my husband's laptop is refusing to start up...an error message comes up saying \windows\system32\config\system...no idea what this means. It's not letting him load the recovery disks, just keep getting the same error message. We think it may be a virus. Would be soooo grateful for any advice!

Hi Sez,

Corrupted registry.

How to Recover from a Corrupted Registry [Q307545]
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307545

If you do not have a regular XP CD, you may not be able to load the Recovery
Console normally. Try running from the boot disk set instead (you will need
6 blank formatted floppies for this).
