Startup problem

In XP pro computer boots normal, however when in XP
after welcome screen i have my background picture ( window Mountain)

there is NO sys tray
NO icons on my desktop
NO VGA color ( only when in F8 setup choosen)

i tried all F8 options no result.

What is the most likely cause.. ?
