Startup - Nothing happens!!!

I keep starting up my laptop and it loads like normal
until it reaches the desktop, for which it only loads the
wallpaper - explorer etc.. is nowhere to be seen
Pressing ctrl-alt-del gets me into the task bar which
basically tells me explorer is not loaded.
I am very confused!

In Task manager, go to File|New Task and type in
explorer.exe and see what happens.
