when starting XP Pro I get a message 'CFS Serve.EXE encountered a problem and
needs to close' What should I do? and if possible what has caused this

Are you sure about the spelling of that file CFS Serve.exe? Is this a
Toshiba laptop? CFSserv.exe is a Toshiba laptop utility - Tom posted a link
to a description of it.

Disable it from Msconfig on the startup tab, or remove it via Add/Remove
programs and then reinstall, or contact Toshiba tech support.
