Startup items disappeared

Recently some startup items have disappeared from the taskbar at the bottom
right hand corner. Things like the speaker volume and battery level
indicator, but also others. Then now and then they reappear. Then disappear
again. Something must have been corrupted.

Somebody know what to do about this?

Thanks,

John

Not sure if this will help. Right click on the taskbar, and select
Properties.
In XP Home, at least, I have an option, which I have a checkmark at,
that says "Hide inactive icons". Many of the items I use frequently I
have other shortcuts to, anyway, and don't need all the stuff showing.
(sometimes I need to adjust the volume, but usually have a couple of
other options in the software or on the speaker/headset).

Still, if you need to see all of them (like AIM, MSN messenger, etc.)
just uncheck the Propeties "Hide inactive icons". and "Apply". All of
the icons are in the "notification area".

Pat,

Thanks, it did help, and got a couple of them back. Then I examined one by
one a couple and managed to get them back: the battery indicator and the
sound volume. They were both checked as "present" when they in fact weren't,
so I unchecked them and then rechecked them, and they reappeared. I don't
know whether this will become a stable situation, but for now I've recovered
a few.

Of course I still don't know WHY all this happened, but ... stay tuned, I
guess.

Thanks again,

John

Copy/Paste this into Start>Run
%windir%\system32\Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks (OK)
Be still and let it run 'til the HDD LED stops blinking. Improves boot
time/startup, just a bit.

You've set too many background apps set to run 24/7. Remove some of
them.
