I have a question concerning computer startup in Safe Mode

I found a solution to a computer problem in the Microsoft
Knowledge Base (Art. #8123390). The article told me
to "Start the computer in the Safe Mode and then restart
the computer." Then I am supposed to follow other
instructions as various windows pop up.

I have Windows XP Professional. When I push my
computer's start button, it takes me immediately to a
Welcome Window. I never have an opportunity to click on
anything other than to enter my password. The Help
window is no more help than the previously mentioned
Knowledge Base article, because it also tells me to do
things that the computer never gives me an opportunity to
do (such as choose "Please select the operating system to
start.").

Can anybody tell me how to start my computer in Safe Mode
when I don't really seem to have any control over my
Welcome Window? Thanks.

The opportunity to enter safe mode is well before the Welcome Window.
After you computer does it's POST test, you hit the F8 key to bring up a
menu that will give you the option to enter safe mode.

Another way to do it, is to keep hitting the F8 key immediately after
you hit the power switch to turn the computer on. Just beware that some
computers use the F8 key to get into the BIOS.

You ought to have a moment where the BIOS information goes to a black
screen, (before the initial appearance of the Windows logo) in which to
hit the F8 key and get a menu to select Safe Mode.

But it can be tricky to hit. In that case, in Windows, Start - Run and
run
MSConfig.exe

In its Boot.ini page, check /SAFEBOOT
and exit to reboot to Safe Mode.

You will need to run it again, and uncheck, when you want to return to
normal. And then when a panel comes up that you are in Troubleshooting,
check the "Don't show this again " and Exit
