During startup I get the Windows XP Logo page loading and
then just a black screen - no logon window. My events
viewer has the following errors:
Event ID 7000

Is it my imagination or is XP the must unstable MS
product to date?

No, it is the most stable ever released. XP is a much more
robust and secure operating system. Instabilities and "Junk"
that the Windows 9X/ME family would tolerate just won't
pass under XP. Badly written drivers, Buggy Applications
and "ancient" hardware are likely to fail when used with XP.
This is a misconception of long time 9x users, what to them
seems like less stability is in fact more stringent requirements.
If things that worked under 9X fail using XP, then check to
be sure it is compatible and most importantly - Check for XP
drivers and patches for "ALL" applications. Vendors have
had plenty of time to test their applications under XP and many
have released patches and updates to bring their software up
to date.

It's your imagination or it's your computer/hardware/drivers/software. Xp is
the most stable windows yet.
Try a repair install.
