Startup Application self restores after removal??

I became disillusioned with Norton Antivirus (conflicts with SoundBlaster
Audidgy2) and completely removed it from my Win XP Pro SP2 system. However,
it remained in the Startup Applications as ccApp.exe so I removed it only to
find that, somehow, it restored itself. I searched the registry for
ccApp.exe, found two entries and removed both. However, when I searched the
registry again they were back.

Since I have switched off System Restore, can anyone please tell me how to
remove this entry to stop it from trying to start a non-existent
application?
 
Not a simple/straight-forward process, to remove Symantec software.
Check Symantec's support page(s). They offer a post uninstall clean
up utility for many of their products, such as RNav, RNis & SymClean.

Here is a makeshift listing of things to do: (Assumes no Symantec
programs are still in use).

Before starting this process, take a System Image as the risk factor
on this is fairly high.

1. Uninstall the core application (Reboot)
2. Uninstall Live Update & LiveReg
3. Full System Search (Hidden & System) for keyword "Symantec"
2 folders should appear - Delete both. (Can be more if there are
two or more user profiles on the machine.
4. Open Device Manager, Click View - tic/check "Show Hidden
Devices". Expand Non-Plug and Play category. Look through the
listing for items that start with Sym. Double-Click each one to open
details box. Click the driver (TAB), then the Driver Details box.
If the provider is Symantec, close all boxes - Right Click the entry
and choose Uninstall. There may be as many as 5-8 of these
orphaned Services/Drivers.
5. Use RegSeeker or any Registry tool that has a comprehensive Find
function (or manually with Regedit). Locate all instances of the strings
syman
norto
Remove all of them.
6. Reboot

This should get 95% of the remnants off your system.

your advice and now everything is OK again. What a star you are.

Now I need to find a Antivirus product that does not give me the grief I got
from Norton Antivirus - do you know of anything?
 
Computer Associates eTrust 7.0. Free for one year. Each year
the subscription renewal rate is $12.95 per PC. I use the MS
Partner Pack version, then immediately update to 7.0. You'll
need to Register at eTrust, so you can be notified of updates &
patches.

After reboot, Register at CA/eTrust then download the latest
7.0.6.7

Has a small system footprint & updates itself daily (Around ~100 kB)
CA has a number of offers floating around, so you want to be
sure to get just the AntiVirus and not their Security Suite package.
 
Thanks to everyone for the great assistance.

I have reviewed the Antivirus products offered by Avast, AVG and Computer
Associates (eTrust 7.0) and have chosen, and bought, eTrust 7.0. The
product installed without a hitch (unlike the Norton where I needed multiple
re-boots to install then spent major time downloading fixes, making registry
deletions, registry additions and disabling certain parts of other software
to make it work) and I am delighted.

Thanks for the suggestion to upgrade from the Microsoft Partner Pack. That
proved to be the most economic solution to my problem.

AVG antivirus from Grisoft - and it's free. Works well.
