I seem to have lost my start and shutdown sounds. I can
see they are set in the sounds area and can hear them
when I test. I do not hear them when the system starts or
shutsdown. Strange thing is if I create another account
and go into that account, then they do work. Anyone have
an idea?

Look for "Where did my sounds go?" on Kelly's excellent website, here:

I think it might be in her "Top Ten".

Never mind! The instructions on Kelly's site said to
double-click the word default and delete it. It should
state right-click and delete. When I did that I got
the "value not set" wording and voila, all is good!
Thanks a bunch for your help!

Use TweakUI - one of the XP Powertoys from (if you have installed XP
SP1)
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp

If you have not installed SP1, the earlier version can be found at
http://download.microsoft.com/download/whistler/Install/2/WXP/EN-US/TweakUiPowertoySetup.exe

Once installed you will find it in Start - All Programs - Powertoys for
Windows XP

On its General page make sure that 'Beep on errors' is checked. That is
what triggers these two sounds. You can set the Error sound for other
errors to (None) in Sounds without affecting this
