Hello,

I was away from the computer for a while and my niece (aged 4) had
apparently tried to use it to get on to the barbie website.... anyway, when
the computer is switched on it gave the message

"the computer was not switched off properly and ....... you can try the
last known decently working setting"... and so fourth

When selecting any of the settings the computer would then restart all on
its own.
Since i was away, my sister (the mother of the 4 yr old) tried going in to
safe mode but the computer did the same thing, rebooted.

I came back today and tried going in to the boot menu (i did nothing) and
then went into the safe mode.... the mode was showing line by line itself
trying to start, the screen went blank for a bit then the computer started in
safe mode. I didn't know what i was looking for but am sure i didn't change
anything, then i turned the computer off and on again and now the computer is
workin fine apart from there being no sound.

What happened and how can i get my sound back?

Any help will be much appreciated!

I don't know what happened because I wasn't there but the 4-year-old did
more than just go to the Barbie website. Whatever happened, you should
reinstall your sound card drivers.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM
computer (HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific
model machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers
anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor. The older Aida32 is good for this, too.
