Someone, please help.
Situation: i installed software for a new logitech webcam and at the end of
the setup the program states that it will reboot the pc to finish
installing.(standard stuff)
When the pc was rebooting the first thing that came on the screen read
"system bios recovery" or something similar. after about 5mins on a line of
.......................... going across a black screen the pc then shut down.
When i turn on the pc now the monitor stays in stand by mode but i can see
the power light on the pc and i can open my disc drives fine so i know that
power is going in. So what's the deal with the monitor staying blank? I've
done all the usual things, unplug everything, check all connections, but as i
don't have any display i have no idea what else i can do.

Any ideas people?

System BIOS recovery ? - Does your motherboard have a secondary
BIOS (CMOS) chip on it ? Either the installation caused the BIOS to
default values or it attempted to load a backup copy of the BIOS flash
code into the primary chip. Probably for a problem like this you'll need
to tell us more about the hardware such as the Motherboard Vendor &
model #.

I bought the pc when i was living in Greece last Feb from a company called
Multirama(like PC World). It's just got the shops name on the front of the
pc, so not sure what motherboard. I did get a few disc with the pc, one of
then is "SiS 661 FXM Series Motherboard Utilities CD" if that helps any?

Hi Joseph,
Are you able to start in Safe Mode,if so try to start the System in
diagnostic startup(ie. start the system with the basic devices and forget the
Cam for now,if n't try to see the video Card may be moved or got loose, but
without frying the motherboard, and what Os you are using.
Good luck

Partly, it tells me which Vendor/Model Chipset is used on the MB.
Unfortunately, it doesn't tell which actual Motherboard is inside of
the computer. SiS only provides generic specs on chipset products
and that limits knowing how or if the MB has backup BIOS ability.
I would completely unplug the power for around 15-30 minutes &
then try a cold boot. You'll want to try and catch the BIOS setup
prompt and press the appropriate key to access and check settings.
No Video or POST (Power On Self Test) isn't a good thing - But
you never know about PCs.

I'm using window XP Home edition.
I can't get anything on the screen it just stays in standby mode. If i push
the stand by button then my monitor gives the standard "no signal" display
they goes back into stand by.
So, to check the video card i'll need to open up the pc right?

HI Joseph,
May be the cable between your PC and the Monitor n't firmly tight try to
uninstall or unplug the Cable and then try to plug it again and see if you
could go to safe mode by pressing F8 or whatever your Manufacturer setting
is,if n't you seem to me normal user,so don't risk it and take it to any
repair PCs centre and safe yourself the electric shock.

I've done that, but still no luck. Thanks anyway.

Well, i've given that a try but still nothing. When i used to turn on the PC
it would beep (when all the checks were running on screen), but no beep has
been coming from the pc now.
Any other ideas?

Just one, all motherboard have a 3-pin array of staking pins that
control BIOS operation. Usually, Pins 1-2 are shorted for normal
use. If you move the jumper to 2-3 for a few moments it defaults
BIOS back to it's neutral settings. Then you put the jumper back
onto Pins 1-2. On most motherboards, these staking pins are at
or near the BIOS battery ( Standard Watch type cell) or adjacent
to the CMOS chip itself. That's why I originally wanted to know
the motherboard Vendor/Model. The layout or diagram of the pins
to short & location would be in the MB manual. After shorting
the pins, I would watch inside the PC as you apply power. Make
sure the CPU fan is turning and some motherboards have a LED
that illuminates when the Power Supply is connected. Based on
the screen text you mentioned this has the earmarks of some kind
of motherboard failure or BIOS corruption.

Ok. Well now i'm getting out of my depth so i guess i'll have to take it to a
repair store. But thanks for all the ideas.

Ok i've opened the pc case and the motherboard says "SiS 963Lua" and i think
the BIOS chip says " Phoenix D686 " does that help any? I can se that the fan
is working and the LCD light on the motherboard is working ok. I've checked
that all the cards are secure but i'm not sure about the pin settings you
mentioned.

Thanks for the details. Using Google, I found a matching issue on a
forum with the same symptoms as yours (Blank Screen, No Boot).
In fact in the flow of the thread, the user removed the BIOS battery
and re-inserted and didn't resolve the issue.
Making an assumption, I believe the motherboard is likely an AsRock
K7S41GX. Can you download the manual for it and compare the
board layout with yours and confirm that it is what is in your PC ?
http://download.asrock.com/manual/K7S41GX.pdf

I've found some of the books that came with the pc. If my greek is upto
scratch then the motherboard is "P4 TITAN Series motherboard. GA-8S661FXM
Series, SiS 661FX chipset"

Ok. I've taken out the battery and unplugged all power for about 20mins and
when i've switched back on and held down the corect button on the keyboard
i'm still getting ziltch. The manual states that to clear the cmos i have to
short 1-2 pin, and shows me where that is on the board, but dosn't say how to
short it.

With a small Plastic encased jumper - but you can do it with a Flat
blade screwdriver instead (Carefully & Un-powered). Good luck w/
the BIOS reset.

I use a wireless usb keyboard & mouse, they should still work to allow me to
push the correct keywhen re-booting right? Or does the pc ned full power to
activate the usb functions?
