Hi David
What garfield-n-odie says about prompting to save Normal.dot is very valid,
but if the message is
on start up, (rather than a prompt to save changed Normal when you try to
exit Word) then I think it is usually caused by a previous crash. If you say
Yes, I believe Word loads the file it saved during the crash as Normal.dot -
when you exit properly it will save it in place of the old one, I think. If
you say No it throws the rescued file away. Unless you had made some changes
in the previous session that you were particularly anxious not to lose (for
example, some recorded macros or customizations) I would say 'No', as a file
rescued from a crash is more likely to be corrupt than your usual
Normal.dot. If you do want to say Yes and try for the rescued file, then I'd
first make a backup copy of the previous Normal.dot.
If Word keeps on behaving as if the last close was a crash, that can be due
to leftover temp files. See

Third party add-ins should *not* be making changes, deliberately or
accidentally, to Normal.dot. There are several valid ways of supplying
macros and customizations, but this isn't one of them. See
