Hi, does anyone know anything about this message and what happens if I click
YES and what happens if I click NO

"Word automatically saved changes to Normal document template, do you want to
load it?"

Thanks
David

You should not allow Word to automatically save changes to normal.dot
template. You always want to know when something is trying to change your
normal.dot template, so you can say yes or no to allowing the changes. To
change this setting, click on Tools | Options | Save | check the "Prompt to
save Normal template". Hopefully it's just a poorly written add-in, and not
a virus, that is making changes to your normal.dot. Two common add-ins that
do this are the Norton AntiVirus Office Plugin and the Works Suite Add-in for
Word. See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=329820 "How to use Office
programs with the Norton AntiVirus Office plug-in" for information about
disabling the NAV Office Plugin. The Works Suite Add-in for Word allows you
to perform a mailmerge in Word using a data source in Works; if you don't
need this functionality, you can uninstall it in Start | Control Panel |
Add/Remove Programs.

Thanks for this, unfortunataley we do have specialist third party addins that
it would appear to make changes to normal, do you know what answer should be
given to this question as it appears to be poorly documented and you can
guarantee that it is the IT director who has had the message and wants to
know what answer to give and why.

Any further help would be very gratfully received.

Hi David

What garfield-n-odie says about prompting to save Normal.dot is very valid,
but if the message is

on start up, (rather than a prompt to save changed Normal when you try to
exit Word) then I think it is usually caused by a previous crash. If you say
Yes, I believe Word loads the file it saved during the crash as Normal.dot -
when you exit properly it will save it in place of the old one, I think. If
you say No it throws the rescued file away. Unless you had made some changes
in the previous session that you were particularly anxious not to lose (for
example, some recorded macros or customizations) I would say 'No', as a file
rescued from a crash is more likely to be corrupt than your usual
Normal.dot. If you do want to say Yes and try for the rescued file, then I'd
first make a backup copy of the previous Normal.dot.

If Word keeps on behaving as if the last close was a crash, that can be due
to leftover temp files. See

http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm

Third party add-ins should *not* be making changes, deliberately or
accidentally, to Normal.dot. There are several valid ways of supplying
macros and customizations, but this isn't one of them. See

http://word.mvps.org/faqs/macrosvba/DistributeMacros.htm

Thank you so much for this, I really appreciate you taking the time to answer
my question.

Regards
David
