Friends PC runs slowly as apears to start a program
called STARTEAK.EXE on log in. This consumes 98% of
memory at all times and Norton antivirus - will not run -
says - you must rebot your PC each time.

Killing the process releases the memory but most other
things then fail to invoke.

have searched all web sites and cannot find STATEAK.EXE -
Is it a virus and if not - why does it consume so much
memory and how do I stop it.
It it not in the START menus and I cannot search since
explorer hangs when you enter the search string! Any ideas

Kevin,
Starteak.exe, I believe, is a program that allows the Easy Access Buttons on
your (presumed) Compaq computer and/or keyboard. This is a known bug. Your
best bet is to remove the program entirely from starting up. You can go
about this a few ways - the easiest is probably going into scoffing (Start -
Run - scoffing), go to the last tab, Startup, find the offending program,
and uncheck it. That will prevent it from loading at system boot.

Good luck.

I have the same program on my Compaq Presario 5106CA
running Windows XP Professional. However, I do not have
the issue you explain. I too have Norton Anti-Virus 2002
and still do not have this issue. Talk to Compaq, and see
if they could help you. Their e-mail service is
incredible; you get a reply and solution with in an hour!

Give it a shot.
