Hi,
Method 1:
========
Before proceeding to the Method 2, have you tried the following KB Articles:
1. How to start your computer by using the Last Known Good Configuration
feature in Windows XP at
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;307852
2. How to restore the operating system to a previous state in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=306084
Method 2:
========
Please refer to the weblink
http://www.winxptutor.com/wsaremove.htm and see
section titled ""Here is the solution to the logon - logoff issue in
Windows XP". I have pasted the workaround from the page.
Boot the system to recovery console
===============================
Note: To do this procedure you need to have a retail copy of the Windows XP
cd-rom. Also please note that the Recovery cd supplied with OEM system
will not help.
Boot from the CD. If your system is set to be able to boot from the CD, it
should detect the disk and give a brief message, during the boot up, if you
wish to boot from the CD press any key.
Once you have pressed a key, setup should begin. You will see a reference
asking if you need to load special drivers and another notice that if you
wish to begin the ASR (Automatic Recovery Console) depress F2. Just let
setup run past all of that. It will continue to load files and drivers.
Then it will bring you to a screen. Eventually, you will come to a screen
with the option to (1) setup Windows or (2) Repair Windows Installation
using the Recovery console.
Enter the Recovery Console. Type-in the built-in Administrator password to
enter the Console. You'll see the prompt reading C:\Windows (Or any other
drive-letter where you've installed XP)
Type the following command and press Enter.
CD SYSTEM32
(If that does not work, try CHDIR SYSTEM32)
COPY USERINIT.EXE WSAUPDATER.EXE
Quit Recovery Console by typing EXIT and restart Windows.
You'll be able to login successfully as you've created the wsaupdater.exe
file (now, a copy of userinit.exe)
Now, change the USERINIT value in the registry and change it accordingly as
follows:
Click Start, Run and type REGEDIT. Navigate to:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
In the right-pane, change the value of Userinit to
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,"
Type the above value exactly as given, including the comma - exclude the
quotes. Also, change the path to userinit.exe appropriately, if Windows is
installed in a different drive.
Close Registry Editor and restart Windows.
Hope this helps.
