In booting up my system, Windows XP will not load my
personal settings. It was loading just fine until
today. All I get is a welcome screen, then it goes
blank. All my information is still there, however, I
have to go through the task bar menu in order for me to
run any programs. In other words, my desktop icons do not
appear at all. Neither does my control bar normally
located at the bottom. I need help

Thanks in advance,

Pam

Do you get a blank blue screen? What you describe here is what happing to
me
in Windows 2000. Sometime it does and sometime it doesn't, I get stopped at
a blank blue screen after I log on.

.
create a new user profile and open two windows of
documents and settings and have old user open on one and
new user closed on the other,

drag and drop start menu, desktop, favorites and
documents from old onto new user one at a time and answer
yes to the prompt.

I assume you are not familiar with using the Google search to find any past
responses to enquiries similar to yours. Let me show you how, if I may.

Go to the Google home page. Click [Groups] above the text box. On the
following page, click [Advanced Group Search] at the end of the text box, in
small print. Now on the search parameter proper, you only need to enter the
following:

Newsgroup: microsoft.public.windowsxp.general
Subject: missing desktop icons
Author: Kelly (It happens that I know MVP Kelly Theriot has
responded)

You will find two entries, reporting that missing desktop icons together
with a missing taskbar is very common. A workaround is outlined.

If you have any difficulty, feel free to post back.
