First: I am computer ignorant & trying to learn. On start up in the systems
tray there are programs that run automaticly on start up. Now I understand
some of these programs are required for proper opperation, some are ones I
want to start automaticly i.e: ZA Pro, AVG for email. One [Local Area
Connection 5, cable disconnected] I have no idea what this is or if it is
reqired to run at start up. Can this be shut off so this program does not
run automaticly? I also understand the more of these programs that run
automaticly the longer it takes for the system to start up/shutdown. Are
there articles available for study on this situation? Thank you.

There is a program you can down load that I think is one of the greatest
around and it's FREE.
Go to http://www.startupmechanic.com/
My friends still thank me for turning them on to this program.
Give it a try and let me know what you think.

Not all of the icons you see represent programs that consume significant
significant system resources. This applies to your LAN icon.
If you are starting up with many non-Windows applications that you seldom
use, then it is wise to remove them from the Startup folder. For example, my
CD burning software put itself into the Startup folder when I installed it,
but burning a CD is not a daily activity for me.
You can remove items from the Startup folder. Look in:
C:\Documents and Settings\(your user name)\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
A smart thing to add to Startup is the Task Manager. You can drag a shortcut
into the Startup folder for this. You will get a new icon in the Systray
(now known as the Notification Area) that shows your CPU usage in real time.
You can disable your LAN connection since you are not using it:
Start - Control Panel - Network Connections
Right click on Local Area Connection and Disable.

Thank you for you assistance, however being a new computer user I think I
will just leave well enough alone over messing somthing up. Thanks again.
