Start up problem

I am using windows xp sp2, and the problem i've been having is that when i
start up the computer, the screen displays a message saying "no signal" and
then the monitor shuts off and the pc seems to have frozen. There are times
when windows actually gets to load up, but then suddenly i get the message
"no signal" and the monitor shuts off and the pc does not respond.

Initially i thought it was a problem with the monitor, but after trying to
switch monitors, found that a different monitor had the same outcome.

I also tried to repair windows with the xp cd, and i formatted as well, but
the problem is still inherent.

I was wondering if this is a hardware failure (motherboard?) or is it
something to do with the software?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Likely to be the signal from the video card or motherboard if the video is
built in. If it is a video card check the card is inserted into the
motherboard fully, if built in then I think the motherboard may need
replacing.

Hi, Adora.

When you switched monitors, did you also switch cables? It sound exactly
like the message my LCD monitor gives when the it is on but the computer is
turned off. If both your monitor and your PC are on, but you still get the
message, it could be that a break in the cable stops the signal from getting
from your graphics card to the monitor.

Of course, it could be the graphics card itself. Can you try a different
one? Maybe try your bad(?) monitor (and cable) on a different PC?

I doubt very much that it is a software problem.

Well i first thought it was the video card as well, so i replaced the video
card with a newer one, and it is firmly in place with the motherboard and the
plug from the monitor.

When this "no signal" thing occurs, one time i had some music playing in the
background, and it abruptly stopped once the "no signal" message appeared and
then everthng stopped responding. This is why i suspect it is a hardware
thing.

I will look into replacing the motherboard...thanks. I wonder if there are
any other possibilities?

Perhaps there is something wrong with the connector on the motherboard (AGP
I assume) so replacing the motherboard may be the only option. As far as I
know the "no signal" message usually refers to a video fault.
Sorry no other suggestions.

Hi RC, yes when i switched monitors, i took the cables with me. My monitor
works find on another computer, but another monitor has the same problem on
my computer. The other monitor doesn't say "no signal", but it just remains a
blank screen.

I replaced the video card (graphics), because thats what i thought the
problem was, but the problem is still there. I was informed that the mother
board might need replacing. Do you have any other suggestions? Thanks.

No signal means either...

A: The processor has fried.

B: The motherboard is going bad or has died.

Generally the processor just dies and thats it - dead for good. Since
your comp works sometimes, for a while at least, my bet is the
motherboard. I doubt it has anything to do with the video card or monitor.

One caveat, failing power supplies can cause *very* strange things to
happen. When you get the 'no signal' do the lights on the case show any
activity at all or are the case fans running? If so then its probably
not the power supply.

John

Hi John, i also thought it was the power supply, but all the fans are working
when it says "no signal". If i listen closely, i could detect that the
whirring of the computer sort of slows down right when it stops responding.
And the red light comes on. So i guess it could be either the mother board or
the cpu. like you said.

Thanks everyone. will let you know how it turns out.
