i'm running win xp.

i was d/ling a .torrent file and the system crashed to
blue screen. i rebooted, and after windows loaded up, only
the desktop pic was visible. all the desktop icons and
start-up taskbar had disappeared. the mouse icon was still
visible, however, and i was able to move it around. i
could get into the windows task manager with ctrl-alt-del,
and was able to run programs by using "browse." when i
logged off, the desktop icons and taskbar appeared for a
split second before it switched to the shut off screen.

i have tried doing a clean boot by using msconfig. and i
have tried to reinstall winxp. reinstalling doesn't work
because it claims that i have a program that is trying to
finish installing and that i'm to let the computer install
it before trying to reinstall xp.

sorry if this is confusing. i'm confused myself. i've
never had this problem before, and it's completely baffled
me.

any help will be greatly appreciated. thank you.

You might consider a Non-destructive restore. Reboot the
computer & press F10 repeatedly until the System Recovery
screen displays. I recently went through this with my HP
Pavillion computer. I didn't get the XP cd with it...the
recovery image was on a partition on my computer.
Depending on your OEM, this may work for you too. Step
by Step instructions are pretty easy to follow.
