How do I edit the files which are loading resident
programs when XP loads up applications at start-up
time ... what files contain those which are auto loaded
and how do I edit them to remove bogus
applications/programs which have been installed without
my knowing?

Please help me identify what programs are required, and
which are not or may be potentially unsafe.

Thanks,

Go to Start > Run and type: MSCONFIG , and hit enter.
Click on the Startup tab and uncheck the program(s) you
don't want to startup, then click on "apply".

Can't help you "identify what programs are required, and
which are not or may be potentially unsafe" since I have
no idea what programs/applications you have installed on
your computer.
