when I start up xp home edition i am getting the following
error message:

stop: 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0x8058f9aa, 0xf894c588,
0xf894c288)

Xp was hanging on start up very shorlty after loading and
I installed win2000 (to see if that would work - which it
does fine). Unfortunately I can no longer start XP in safe
mode and therefore cannot find my Product ID to get access
to the online support via microsoft! and my modem is not
working in win2000.

any help very appreciated as I am getting extremely
frustrated.

thanks
ross

First: By installing W2K you have overwritten ntldr & ntdetect for XP
- start W2K & copy those files from the XP CD

Google: stop: 0x0000007e

thx - unfortunately the only cd's I have are product
recovery ones which came with the computer - which had xp
pre-loaded on it. I tried to use these before to reset the
computer but they gave some other error message. Is it
possible to uninstall w2k instead?

Even that CD should have those files - or get them from any XP machine
Or go in to recovery console from your CD & fixboot (iirc)
Uninstalling W2K will not help -- I am assuming it is on a separate drive,
right?

thx - the cd's I have are bl@@dy useless! when i insert
them and turn on the computer they try to run symnatec
ghost 7.0 programme and all I get are error messages - so
I can't use them.

Also I don't think that I installed win2k on a separate
drive - is this a bad move (oops I'm beginning to feel
very naive!). maybe uninstall would help? how do I do this?
