Start tool bar

My Start button is not operating. I have only an hourglass. I can not click on Start to open programs, shut down, go to My Computer or anything. The hour glass shows all along the bottom tool bar and even into the clock on the right hand side. The clock is still keeping time. This laptop took 4 hours to defrag so it was really hosed up. I can't "run" msconfig because I can't get a menu to pop up from Start. I have restarted using Control/Alt/Delete. Any suggestions?!?!? Thanks!!!
 
Don't know about your start button, but you can open up a Run command line
by using the Windows key + R shortcut. Btw does the menu work with the
Windows key anyway?

I have the same problem. After a week of running dewormers and stuff now the
computer comes on and I get only a black screen. Most of taken out the video
driver. still no control. Now its like trying to use the computer with the
monitor turned off. HELP

Fix for me if y'all have GoBack installed: go to
start-run-msconfig-services
Uncheck: GoBack Polling
don't need, it is the 'ad' which says" protected by GoBack"

I tried the Windows Key + R for the Run command, that doesn't get me anywhere. No, I don't get a menu with the Windows key. Keep trying for me, guys and gals!!! I reinstalled Windows XP. Nothing changed.
