Jerome,

Assuming this is a home computer and not a corporate controlled system:

The "Run" link is controlled by an option in the "Taskbar" properties. You
can change this as follows:
1. Right Click on an empty piece of the Taskbar. ( a menu should appear )
2. Select the "Properties" menu item. ( this loads a dialog with 2 tabs )
3. Click on the "Start Menu" tab
4. Make sure you have the "Start Menu" radio button selected.
5. Click the Advanced Button beside the "Start Menu" radio button
6. This will load a new this dialog, select the "Advanced" tab
7. In the "Start Menu Items" list box, scroll down until you see a checkbox
with the label "Run command" and make sure this is checked.
8. Click the "OK" button on this and the previous dialogs.

You should now see the run link on the start menu.

The Shutdown and Restart buttons are on the dialog that appears when you
click the "Turn Off Computer" button on the start menu. They do not appear
on the start menu itself.

I cannot find "run" or "turn off computer". They are not on the list. I have
xp. but thanks for the response

If you have Windows XP Professional then try this:

1. Locate the GPEDIT.MSC program in your Windows\System32 folder.
2. Run the program and expand to:
User Configuration
Administrative Templates
Start Menu and Taskbar
3. In the right-side pane, you can find both entries like:
"Remove Run menu from Start Menu" &
"Remove and prevent access to the Shut Down command"
4. Check the "State" of both entries. If they are set to "Not Configured" or
"Enable" then double-click the entries and set them to "Disable".
5. May require you to Restart your computer for changes to take effect.

If that doesn't help or you have Windows XP Home Edition then try this:

1. Goto your \Windows folder and find the REGEDIT or \Windows\System32
folder and find Regedt32. Open the program.
2. Now, expand to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

3. In the right-side pane, delete the entries:
"NoClose"
"NoRun"

Hope this help, let us know!

Jerome,

I know what your problem is. The list of things to do was supposed to
recover the "RUN" option on the start menu.

Did you follow the instructions?

What happened??

Hang on the Penny just dropped, You are using to the "CLASSIC menu" as seen
in Windows 98/Me.

That is the only place that an option called "turn off computer" can be
found !!

Are you using the classic menu? To find out do the following...

1. right click on the START button in the task bar.
2. select "Properties" from the menu that appears.
3. select the "start menu" tab on the window that opens.

Is "Start Menu" or "Classic Start menu" radio button checked??

If "Classic Start menu" is set :-

Press the "Customise" button, only one should be enabled. A new Window will
appear. There is a list box called "Advanced Start menu setting". In this
list is an entry called "Display Run", make sure that this has a tick in the
checkbox.

Press Ok on this window, and then Ok again on the remaining window.

THE RUN Option on your Classic Menu should now appear!!!

Jerome,

Can you open a command window?

It should be in Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command prompt

Now try to do what RajKohli suggested above

Otherwise find GPEDIT.MSC using Explorer and just double click on it ( must
be a Administrator user type of course )

i have tried both classic and standard menu trying to get my my run back. On
the classic there is no "display run " there on the list in the advanced
start menu settings. I have also lost my clipboard last night. I am having a
box come up with (low virtual memory), could this be causing the problems?
thanks again
