i aborted an update installation of windows and when i turned my computer on
the following day my start menu was missing. what can i do to fix this?

when an update is installed before the computer automatically shuts down..
before it was finished i turned my computer off. now the start menu is
missing.

You should not turn your computer off during an installation, but I
guess you know that by now. Your computer is now in an unstable state.
If you're lucky you have a restore point from just before the updates
installed. Otherwise you'll need to reinstall Windows.

Your desktop will be replaced with the default Windows desktop, so if
there are files on your desktop that you want to keep, move them to My
Documents. Reinstalling Windows - as opposed to erasing your hard disk
and starting fresh - does not affect the contents of My Documents.

You should always backup before reinstalling Windows. Make a backup copy
of every file and folder you wouldn't want to lose. Just in case.

is there a way for me to reinstall windows but my desktop files wont be
removed?

If you reinstall Windows, you lose *everything* on the drive.

However, there is also something called a "Repair Installation." If
you do a Repair Installation, it should not affect anything but the
operating system itself (although there are no guarantees, and it's
always prudent to first be sure you have a good backup of anything you
can't afford to lose). But a Repair Installation really just repairs
some things, and isn't a real installation at all. Sometimes it fixes
problems you may be experiencing; other times it may not.
