start menu is blank

Hi, the start menu is empty it does not contain shortcuts to the programs I
use most often.This list stays blank. How can I enable this feature?

Ramesh, thanks for the immediate response but my registry does not
contain[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
I get all the way to policies and Explorer does not exist. Cannoy fix the

Then, it's not due to policy settings. Perhaps a corrupt UserAssist registry key?

Right-click an empty area in the Start menu and select Properties. In the Start Menu tab, click Customize. Configuration options for the Programs list are on the General tab. Make sure that the "Number of programs on Start" is not set to 0.

If that does not help, then try this:

1. Create a System Restore point
2. Open Task Manager and End "Explorer.exe" instances
3. Open Regedit and then navigate to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist

4. Backup the UserAssist key to a REG file and the delete the key
5. Create new Explorer.exe task using Task Manager (File > New)

Created A restore Point
Opened Task Mgr. And Ended Explorer.exe instances
Opened Regedit and navigated to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist

The user assist Key is Default Reg_sz (value not set)

How do I "Backup the UserAssist key to a REG file and the delete the key"!

1. Created a System Restore point
2. Opened Task Manager and End "Explorer.exe" instances
3. Opened Regedit and then navigated to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\UserAssist

4. I back upped the UserAssist key to a REG file and then I deleted the key
5. Created new Explorer.exe task using Task Manager

Unfortunately it did not produce the result desired.
