start menu button won't open

Running Win XP Pro w/o issue for quite a while. In the last few months,
started getting situation where the Programs list on the Start menu would
randomly become "empty" even though all programs were resident and working.
A re-boot or re-login usually restored this. Occasionally if I didn't reboot
and ignored the problem it would get worse to the point where the Start menu
button itself wouldn't open (thus requiring a Cntl-Alt-Del to get a dialogue
for rebooting). After reading online forums, concluded I needed to create a
new user profile, which I did, and the problem seemed to be resolved for a
few days. This morning I found that the Start button is again non-responsive
(under the new user profile). So I ask for your suggestions and thank you in
advance. What else can I try (short of a new XP install)? Why is this
happening? Might I have copied over something evil when I created the new
user profile?

Thanks!

I'd love to hear the answer to this question too!!! I have the same
problem.

I'm not sure where it's coming from. It seems to happen to me at more
random times... My program menu has been empty and other times the
start button won't work at all. Anyone with any info on this... thanks
for the help.
