Start Menu Always at Top Left if Taskbar Hidden

I often hide the taskbar and use Alt-Tab to switch windows when I'm working.
What's kind of annoying is that the start menu always comes up at the top
left when I hit the Microsoft key. Is there some wicked cool registry key
that I can change or something to fix this?

That is generally coined as the Windows Logo key. And it is doing what it
is supposed to do. If you want to disable it, see line 9.
