What determines whether a program I just ran makes it to the Start
List? Sometimes I see a recent program there, sometimes I don't?

I notice that if I delete something from that list, another program
pops up.

Hi, Howard.

This is an MRU (Most Recently Used) listing. Just about every program you
run goes onto the list and stays until the list "overflows" and the newest
one pushes the oldest one off. Normally, we never delete anything from the
list, but it doesn't grow much because of its MRU behavior.

We can decide, within limits, how many programs to keep in the list. I've
forgotten exactly how and I can't check just now, but you should be able to
find it if you right-click on the Start button, then click Properties.

RC

Windows displays a set number of programs in the Start Menu.
You can control this by right-clicking Start\Properties\Start
Menu\Customize\General.
Choose Small Icons (so that a larger number of programs fit in the Start
Area).
Then under Programs (Number of programs on Start Menu) increase the number
that can fit - I have about 20 that I use most.
You can click Clear List here anytime so that the List is built up again.
As to priority of which programs go in here I think that they are the ones
you most frequently access - but this is my guess only. Others more
knowledgeable can give you a better answer.

Except that sometimes I run a program and it doesn't show up. Some
other criterion must be used as well.

That guess makes sense. In that case, I'd like to find the list and
manually unselect some jobs, without clearing all the other jobs.

That can be done easily Howard: just click your Start Menu, right-click the
item you want to remove, and from the menu select Remove from this List.

I saw that before - and another item pops up. I would like to see
the whole list. I can and do edit
C:\Documents and Settings\brazee\Recent that way.

I suppose it exists somewhere, but I haven't been able to find it.

Read the instructions at the top.

Change the Number of Recent Documents to 25

Useful tid-bit. I am inferring then that there isn't a way to do
what I want though.

Hi Howard,

Yes that was a useful tidbit, but it had nothing to do with what you're
asking.

See if this helps.

Hi, Wes.

Thanks for that. I thought it was an MRU (Most Recently Used) list. Most
Frequently Used (MFU) sounds like a more useful listing.

Hi RC,

I still get confused with MFU and MRU. :-)

Or maybe it's MFC, More Frequently Confused. My MFC list is a long one.
