Start Button Search - finds but won't run app?

Possibly user error here (and I would RTF if I could find a suitable topic :(
), but...

I was under the impression that I could run a program by clicking the start
button and typing... Vista would use the index to offer choices... well, it
does that much but I have to click an item on the list - hitting return even
when there is only one item on the list (e.g. I type Microsoft Office Word
2007) does nothing.

Is this correct behaviour?
If yes, then
<sigh>

Oops - finger trouble... sent too soon :(

Rest of message should have been:

How can it be fixed if it has gone wrong?

Thanks,

Julian

I would say so. The arrow keys can be used to scroll up or down the
list. When the desired item is selected (highlighted) press < enter >.

Except it doesn't :( I tried a search ("Word 2007") which brings up the app
and other files, the app is apparently selected... used down arrow to move
away and then back to ensure it WAS selected, pressed <enter> and nothing...

The only way I can get Word 2007 to run is by going to All Programs and
finding it under "Microsoft office" and clicking on that.

FYI the properties of the shortcut at the top of the list (that doesn't
invoke the app when I hit <enter> has as target "Microsoft Office Standard
2007") folder path being "c:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start
Menu\Programs\Microsoft Office" - EXACTLY the same as the shortcut that
doesn't work.

Same problem for the also installed Word XP/2002 - but other apps are OK, so
I guess the Office 2007 Trial installation has screwed up :(

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sorry (it's either me or the PC today!) I didn't mean the second "doesn't
work" I meant the two shortcuts - one which works and the one that doesn't -
seem to be identical in the key area of path...

It does seem that the office 2007 trial install must have made an error.
Word 2007 works on the system here when I just type in word and hit enter

Does the problem persist across reboots. There is only one thing you are
looking at - Search Results and the main Start menu are all views of the
underlying item (usually something on All Programs). Office shortcuts are
special Windows Installer shortcuts - they start Windows Installer, which
runs some install checks on Word to see if auto repair should kick in.
Windows Installer then starts Word.

Sometimes, at least in prev versions of windows, the default directory got
changed for explorer somehow. This caused problems similar, but not
identical, to what you say when it tried to launch files. A reboot fixes
that.

have you tried "winword"? that is the name of the application. so are
these (found from a cmd shell):

I'm having this same problem on my Windows Vista Ultimate 32bits, and for
what I'm reading here many others are having the problem too.

This is a very annoying thing, and what I find more unacceptable is not the
bug itself, but the lack (I could not find it) of any official Microsoft's
statement of acknowledgement of this error and the search for a solution.
