right click on the desktop and choose "proprieties" ...

does this work?

if yes, look for a button "costumize desktop" and you can put the "my
computer" icon on the desktop from there, and them go where you wanna go.

as far as the start button been desable, i've never seen it, so i can't help
you with that.

good luck

Psst! There is generally no need to defragment an NTFS drive.

Tell this to that geriatric by the name of PA Bear who thinks defragging
your HD regularly speeds up your computer.

It reminds me of my teacher who used tell us "An apple a day keeps you away
from your doctor". It never worked with me because I always got hurt
playing football so my teacher was a fibber.

Didn't know that. Always seems to be recommended here. Could you explain why
not on NTFS drives? or point me in the right direction.

I don't think its true ("that there is never a reason to defrag NTFS drives"
(or any, for that matter), so I'd take that advice with a grain of salt.

You did type "generally" but the OP didn't mention NTFS.

Puppylinux, when run from a CD on a Windows box, is smart enough to warn you
when saving pupsave-namexxx.2fs to an NTFS partition to first defrag the
NTFS partition.

No such warning for saving to FAT32.

Try Winkey + E to start Explorer then click a drive and select "Properties"
then "Tools" to get to defrag. For Control Panel click the control panel
icon in the left panel of the Explorer window.

Microsoft states in their TechNet discussions that NTFS is designed to
resist fragmentation, but it is not immune to it, and that there is a
benefit to properly defragmenting an NTFS volume.

If fragmentation was not possible in NTFS it seems unlikely that
Microsoft (and other experts) would expend so much effort discussing
how to detect it, deal with it and and prevent it.

Try these:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Line 117. Restore Taskbar and Start Menu
Line 289. Start Menu - Enable

This might get the "My Computer" icon to the Desktop:
276. Enable/Disable My Computer Icon

To add some system icons to the Desktop, open Display Properties, click
"Desktop" tab, "Customize Desktop..." button, and check the items you
want to add or remove.
