The Start bar will not open on xp

I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately, you'll need to provide a lot more
details if you want focused help.

The First Question Of Troubleshooting: If the problem is new, what changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't?

The Second Question of Windows Troubleshooting: what is the malware/virus
status of the machine? If you think it is clean, what programs (and
versions) did you use to determine this?

Be sure the computer is clean:

The new way to get help stinks.
My messages do not post.
Outlook express was much better than windows live.

I do not work on the computer. But for 6 years we had no problem. Then I
tried to install norton 360 because the computer was beginning to redirect
web pages. Comodo would not up date. Windows update began to fail.

Finding help and direction is nearly immpossible with all these new fancy xp
systems and improvements in the internet.

Everybody is trying to get money and information without help ro a link to
windows aid.

If the computer is not clean then somoene hacked avg, comodo, and any other
protection the user of the computer did not update.

System restore never worked and I have retyped this many times. I will post
this to see if it posts.

And the old way was...?

Windows Live Mail, and/or upgrade to the newest version.

Nothing's stopping you from uninstalling Windows Live Mail and using OE as
your default again.

That being said, you're seeing the affects of a hijackware infection.
Installing Norton 360 on an already-infected computer is not going to help
(nor will N360 be working properly). (One wonders what, if any, anti-virus
application had been installed before you install N360?)

1. See if you can download/run the MSRT manually:
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx

2. Run this online scan (in safe mode w/networking, if need be):

3. Run a /thorough/ check for hijackware, including posting the requested
logs in an appropriate forum, not here.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.
