I would like to know if it is possible to start a windows-xp machine
automatically at a given time say 6am in the morning. If yes, what is the
procedure ?

not possible.

Check your motherboard manual and/or contact the manufacturer.
That option may be in the BIOS.

What you can do is add some electronics to your computer. Replace the
on/off button by a relais. Control the relays by a standard clock
component or build one yourself using a quartz and some logic counting
blocks. Detect the pattern for six o' clock from the counting output and
send it to a flipflop, the flipflop can control the relais and will
start your computer.

And connect the old on/off button to the reset of the flipflop/latch so
you can turn off the computer manually if you want to.
And last but not least: BE CAREFUL

Wouldn't it be easier to just set the BIOS to what to do after power is
restored (e.g. mine allows start boot process or stay powered off) and use a
simple timer on a plug or "in front of" a power bar.

Utter bullshit!

Many/most computer bios setups have an option for doing just that!
